Book Description. Democracy, Nationalism and Multiculturalism provides an up-to-date review of subnational and multicultural issues in Western multinational states. The book includes normative, institutional and comparative accounts of key issues such as: * politics and policies of accommodation * multiculturalism * recognition of group rights. The key to “democratic multiculturalism” is to delegitimize multiculturalism by making it a tool for majority interests. As Salter states, multiculturalism as practiced in the West consists of minority group mobilization coupled to majority group atomization and the complete neglect of, and opposition, to majority group interests.

The claims of multiculturalism. Multiculturalism is closely associated with “identity politics,” “the politics of difference,” and “the politics of recognition,” all of which share a commitment to revaluing disrespected identities and changing dominant patterns of representation and communication that marginalize certain groups (Gutmann , Taylor , Young ).

This chapter continues the arguments of Chap. 2, in greater detail. The consequences of an ideological, language-centered and relativist theory of culture are illustrated through examples. The Author: Alin Olteanu.   Read "Democracy, Multiculturalism, and the Community College A Critical Perspective" by Robert A. Rhoads available from Rakuten Kobo.
